Major Jute Producing States in India

Areas of Production: The production and cultivation of jute is restricted mainly to the states that lies along the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta in West Bengal and in Assam, Bihar and Orissa. In recent years, jute cultivation has also been extended to the states of Meghalaya, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

West Bengal:

West Bengal produces about 65 per cent of the country’s lute and occupies the leading position in the production.

The main jute growing districts in the state of West Bengal are Cooch Behar, Nadia, Bardhaman, Murshidabad, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Malda, 24-Parganas (South & North) and Medinipur.

Bihar:

Bihar ranks second in jute production among all the Indian states. The important jute producing districts are Purnea, Katihar, Saharsa and Darbhanga.

Assam:

The state of Assam produces a considerable amount of jute. The main Jute producing districts are Kamrup, Goalpara, Tezpur, Sibsagar, Darrang and Nowgong.

Production: India is the largest producer of jute in the world.

Trade: India does not export raw jute; she imports some raw jute from Bangladesh for her demand in jute mill. She exports jute goods.
