Important Monuments

A list of famous and important monuments of India along with brief description is given below:

Taj Mahal, Agra:

Taj Mahal is one of most admired marvelouses in the World and one of New Seven Wonders of the World. The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, UP, India which is the white marble mausoleum. The Taj Mahal is most regarded Mughal Architectures which was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved spouse Mumtaz Mahal.

India Gate, New Delhi:

India Gate is the national monument of India. It is situated in New Delhi, India. Sir Edwin Lutyens has designed the India Gate.

The India Gate was established in the year 1921 and unveiled in the year 1933. It immortalizes the 70,000 soldiers of India who lost in the World War I for the British Army. The India Gate bears the name of 13,516 British and Indian soldiers who died in the Afgan War in 1919.

Red Fort, Delhi:

The Red Fort which is locally called “Lal Quila” was built in the 17th century by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor. The Red Fort was then served as residences of many Mughal emperors. The Red fort was designed by the architect Ustad Ahmed. Shah Jahan had moved his capital to Shahjahanabad from Agra and the Red fort was the palace for him. The Red fort celebrates the Independence Day of India every year on 15th August. Our Prime Minister hoists our tricolor national flag and address the nation at the Red Fort on Independence Day every year.

Charminar, Hyderabad:

The Charminar was built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 in Hyderabad in India. The Charminar is an Islamic style architecture and admired as Global icon for Hyderabad.

Victoria Memorial, Kolkata:

The Victoria Memorial is also called as Victoria Memorial Hall was built between the years 1906 to 1921 by Lord Curzon who was a Viceroy of India (period- 1899 to 1905) at the time of British Raj in Kolkata in West Bengal, India. The total structure was built in Marble and in the memory of Queen Victoria.

Qutub Minar, Delhi:

The Qutub Minar is one of the UNESCO Heritage site, situated in Delhi and tallest Minar in India.The construction of Qutub Minar was started by Qutb-ud-din Aibak and made of marble and red sandstone. The Qutub Minar has 379 steps and 237.8 ft height.

Hawa Mahal, Jaipur:

The “Places of Winds” or the Hawa Mahal is situated in Jaipur in India which was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year 1799 and designed as per the crown of Lord Krishna. The Hawa Mahal has 953 Jharokhas (Small Windows) and made of Pink and Red sandstones. The women are observing the daily life through these Jharokhas at that time.

Sanchi Stupa, Madhya Pradesh:

The Great Sanchi Stupa is situated at Sanchi town in district of Raisen in Madhya Pradesh. It is the oldest structure made of stone in India according to Buddhist Art Frontline Magazine (May 13-26, 1989). Ashoka the great had commissioned the Sanchi Stupa in 3rd Century BC. This place is the birth and wedding place of the wife of emperor Ashoka the great.

Golden Temple, Amritsar:

The Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib is a holy Sikh Gurdwara which is situated in Amritsar in Punjab. It had been built by the Guru Arjan (5th Sikh Guru) in the year 1604. The Adi Granth (Holy Scripture of Sikhism) was installed in the Harmandir Sahib and the Guru Granth Sahib (Holiest text of Sikhism) is also present there. The top floor of the Gurdwara was covered with Gold and has four doors to enter. There is roughly 1, 00,000 people of all religion visit the Golden Temple for worship every day.

Mysore Palace, Mysore:

The Mysore Palace or the Palace of Mysore was built in the year 1912 in Mysore in Karnataka. The Mysore Palace was the residence of the royal family of Mysore, the Wodeyars which ruled the Mysore for more than seven centuries. There is roughly 2.7 million people visit “the Mysore Palace” which is the 2nd highest after “The Taj Mahal”, makes the Mysore Palace 2nd most famous tourist destination in India.
