Facts about Sikkim

Sikkim is located in Himalayan Mountains. Sikkim is the only state with Nepali Majority. Its economy is largely depends on agriculture and also tourism. As per Census 2011, Sikkim has the lowest population among all the Indian states. In terms of land area, it is the second smallest Indian state. The major facts of the Sikkim State are given below. Name: The word “Sikkim” means new house in Limbu Language.

Existence: It is created on 16th May 1975.

Boundary: It is surrounded by Nepal, China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, Bhutan and West Bengal.

Population: As per Census 2011, the total population of Sikkim is 610,577. Sikkim holds 28th rank in population wise.

Land Area: The total area of Sikkim is 7,096 sq. km. Sikkim holds 27th rank in area wise.

Language: Its Official Languages are Nepali, Bhutia, Limbu, Lepcha, Newari, Magar, Tamang, Gurung, Sherpa and Sunwar.

Literacy: Its Literacy Ratio is 76.6%

City: Gangtok is its Capital City. Largest City of Sikkim is also Gangtok.

District: There are 4 districts present in Sikkim.

Climate: Sikkim experiences five types of seasons. These are: winter, summer, spring, autumn and monsoon.

Economy: Agriculture and Tourism are the main pillars of economy of Sikkim State. Among all the states in India, Sikkim is ranked third smallest in terms of GDP.

Connectivity: Sikkim is mostly connected by road.

Places of Interests: Aritar Lake, Borong, Borong Ralong Hot Spring, Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple, Bakthang Waterfalls, Buddha Park etc.

Festivals: They celebrated all Major Hindu, Christian, Buddhist etc. festivals like Diwali, Christmas etc.

Religion: Predominant Religions in Sikkim are Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism.
