On March 17, 2014 By Arnab Basu Category: Modern History of India

Shyamji Krishna Varma was an revolutionary freedom fighter in India.

He was the son of Karsan Bhanushali. He was born in 1857.

The Indian revolutionaries felt the necessity of setting up revolutionary centers in foreign countries in order to secure foreign help. One of the earliest Indians to set up revolutionary centres abroad was Shyamji Krishnavarma (1857-1930).

He was the professor of Sanskrit in Oxford University. Early in 1905 he organised the ‘Indian Home Rule Society’ in London and brought out a journal called the ‘Indian Sociologist’. The object of the ‘Indian Home Rule society’ was to secure home rule for India, and that of the ‘Indian Sociologist’ to plead the cause of India.

Shyamji Krishna Varma also founded “The India House” in London. The ‘India House’ set up by Shyamji was the main centre of revolutionary activities of the Indians in London. Among the Indian revolutionaries who were associated with the ‘India House’ included among others Vinayak Savarkar, Hardayal and Madan Lal Dhingra.

He died on March 30, 1930.
