Short Biography of Surya Sen

Surya Sen was a great Indian freedom fighter. He is known for leading the Chittagong Armoury Raid on 18th April, 1930.

He was born on March 22, 1894.

After the death of Bagha Jatin 1915 A.D. the revolutionary movement of Bengal stopped for nearly a decade. After that, with the appearance of Surya Sen (1893-1934 A.D.), a new wake in the revolutionary movement was notice. During the Civil Disobedience Movement organized by Gandhiji, Chittagong in East Bengal became a hot place of revolutionary movement with the effort of Surya Sen.

The main achievement during the lifetime of Surya Sen was the ‘Chittagong Armoury Raid’ (18th April, 1930). But as he was connected handing over his dead body to h is relatives, it was thrown in the sea. 14 revolutionists in Chittagong Armour case were imprisoned. Many things can be known from the book “Mahanayak Surya Sen” written by Kalpana Dutta. It was only Surya Sen, who masterminded the Chittagong Armoury Raid (1930) who put new enthusiasm in freedom movement of India.

Surya Sen adopted the policy of ”Do or Die” just to expire the British from Indian soil. This policy was widely accepted by the youths of the next generation when it was seen in large number of suicides and thus the dream came true to a great extent. The members of the ‘Bengal Volunteers’ formed by Hemchandra Ghosh, were inspired greatly by Chittagong upsurge and planned to commit secret murders widely. Historian Ramesh Chandra Majumder said that the first direct assumed movement against the British was the armed movement of Azad Hind Fouz of Subhas Chandra Bose. So Subhas Chandra Bose can be called as a descendent of Surya Sen. He was hanged to death on 12th January, 1934.

Surya Sen made ‘Indian Republican Army (1930) consisting 64 revolutionaries of which Lokenath Bal, Ganesh Ghosh, Ambika Chakraborty, Jibon Ghoshal, Tegra Bal, etc.
