Indian National Army (Azad-Hind Fauj)

Subhas Chandra Bose led a serious armed struggle against the British during the Second World War. He formed the Forward Block (1939). He left India in 17th January 1941. A.D. He went to Kabul and from there to Germany. In 1943 he went to Japan to make an attack on the British with Japan’s help.

Indian National Army: Subhas Chandra Bose then came to Singapore and took charge of the famous Indian National Army (INA) or the Azad Hind Fauj, which was formed with the help of Rashbehari Bose and Mohan Singh. It is here that Subhas Bose became known as Netaji.

  • A Japanese army combined with the INA.
  • The INA set up an independent Government in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands under Netaji’s leadership.
  • The Azad Hind Fauj then entered into India through Burma and captured Kohima after severe fighting with the British army.
  • The Azad Hind Fauj tried to capture Imphal also but Japan’s help was half-hearted and so the Fauj began to give way.

Netaji’s trusted lieutenants like Dhillon and Shah Nawaj were captured. Meanwhile, the Allied Powers consisting of Britain, France, America and Soviet Union got the upper hand. Netaji’s dream of liberating India with the help of Japan remained unfulfilled.
