Direct and Indirect Democracy
Direct Democracy
Democracy is said to be direct where all citizens meet to elect the office-bearers of the state and decide the policy of the government. In the big states of today, where the population is very large, this form of direct democracy is not practicable.
Indirect Democracy
In indirect democracy, the people elect their representatives to the legislature which runs the government and controls the policies of the state. It is also termed as a representative democracy. To make this type of democracy more effective, many new devices have been evolved to keep the initiative in the people’s hands.
