1. Which is the largest state in India by area?

Rajasthan is the largest state in India (in terms of area). It covers an area of 342, 239 square kilometres. This represents 10.4% of the whole India (source: Wikipedia).  

In terms of total area, Rajasthan is followed by Madhya Pradesh (308,245 square kilometres), Maharashtra (307,713 square kilometres), Uttar Pradesh (240,928 square kilometres) (source: Wikipedia).

As at 2016, the total population of 74,791,568 people makes Rajasthan 7th most populous state in India (source: Wikipedia).

The name of the state literally means the Land of the Kings. This is because it was ruled by monarchs with remnants of palaces as well as Forts.

Rajasthan is located on the western side of India. The state of Rajasthan was established on the 26 day of January 1950. Its capital city is Jaipur, a city that was founded in 1726. Jaipur is also the largest city in Rajastthan. Its official language is Hindi.

The major features of Rajasthan include the Dilwara temples, Mount Abu, keoladeo national park, Sariska national reserve, Aravalli mountain range and Indus valley civilization.

The state is known for several unique features including the following:

  • Thar Dessert
  • The Indus Valley Civilization (Kalibanga)
  • The Dilwara Temples
  • A national park at Keoladeo
  • Spicy and vegetarian food

The modern state of Rajasthan still carries a rich history of cultural as well as archeological heritage. In addition to that, there are numerous characteristics of both Jain as well as Islamic architecture. Consequently, the state receives a lot of tourists every year.

2. Which is the largest state in India by population?

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India with a population of 199,581, 477 according to 2011 census (source: Wikipedia). This figure represents a population density of 830 people per square kilometer.

In terms of population, Uttar Pradesh is followed by Maharashtra (112,372,972) , Bihar (103,804,637) and West Bengal (91,347,736).

In terms of area, Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest State in India. It has a total area of 240, 928 square kilometer which equals to 6.89% of the whole Indian land.

Economically, this state is the third largest state in terms of economy with a GDP of 150 billion US dollars ( or 9,763 billion rupees). Service and agriculture industries form the largest parts of Utter Pradesh economy.

The capital city of Uttar Pradesh is Lucknow.

Uttar Pradesh is surrounded by Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Nepal, Uttarakhand,  Mandya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

This state is also famous for historical, religious and tourist destinations such as Chauri Chaura, Agra, Budaun, Mathura, Meerut and Ballia among others. In terms of language, Hindi is the most widely spoken language of the state.
