Category: Festivals On August 28, 2017 By Lighthouse

What is Baisakhi festival? Baisakhi is a very important festival in India, and especially for Sikhs. Also known as Vaisakhi, this festival marks the Sikh New Year. It also commemorates the founding of the Sikh community itself, which occurred back in 1699. This act of founding created a community that was known as the Khalsa.

How is Baisakhi festival celebrated? Baisakhi usually occurs on April 13th and April 14th, and it is celebrated every single year. It is most popular in the Punjab region of India, but despite being officially a Punjabi festival it is a beloved festival throughout the nation, and also worldwide: wherever Sikh communities can be found, in fact. This festival is celebrated by means of colorful processions, prayers, and the raising aloft of the flag known as the Nishan Sahib flag.

In addition to being a specifically Sikh festival, Baisakhi also marks the solar new year in the Hindu calendar. So, we can see that it is a festival that brings different cultures together.
