Mother’s Day takes place in India on the second Sunday in May. The date for 2018, for example, is Sunday May 13th.
This is interesting because this is the same date as Mother’s Day in the US. In the UK, however, Mother’s Day takes place in March - and more precisely on the second Sunday of March. This indicates, perhaps, that India derived it Mother’s Day traditions more from the United States than from the UK.
Mother’s Day has only come into fashion and common usage in India relatively recently (i.e. within the last couple of decades). Prior to that it was more popular in Anglophone countries, particularly the UK and the US.
Nevertheless, Mother’s Day is a popular festival on the Indian continent and it is celebrated through giving cards, flowers or gifts to one’s mother or by cooking for her, taking her out for a special treat or doing something else nice for her.
