All life began in water, micro-organisms simple ones leading to complex ones, leading to plant life and evolution of fish, water animals and then into more complex reptiles, mammals etc. But all of them completely dependent and connected with Water for their very existence.
Source of life
Even today, all of life survives on Water as a crucial natural element for its growth and existence. Plants and trees need water to germinate from a seed and grow. Animals and birds depend on plants and also on water. Human beings depend again on plants, animals and also directly on water for their daily survival. Thirst mechanism is an inherent biological mechanism that determines and keeps the water intake for humans and animals in order. Without water humans, animals, birds will not be able to survive beyond a few days. In fact, without water, all of life as we know it today will cease to exist within a few days. The Earth will become a completely barren planet.

Human body and even animal and plant bodies are majorly composed of water. For most of the species more than seventy-five percent of their body composition is made of water. Water serves multiple important functions in the body. It is important to maintain temperature balance in the body. It is an important vehicle for transport of various nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc. from one part of the body to the other. Every cell of the body requires water to stay alive. Without water even a single cell cannot survive. Blood, Bones, Heart, Liver, Brain, Kidney all need water to maintain their daily functioning and to survive.
Drinking and Cooking

Even our daily household cleaning and other activities need a lot water. This water supply is different from the clean water supply needed for drinking, but nonetheless it is water all the same.
Transport
In many parts of the world, waterways are an important means of transportation. Transport and travel via boats over rivers, lakes, canals are important in many cities, towns and villages of the world. In addition, water travel across major oceans and seas, is a means of leisure as well as business transportation across the world.
Ways to Save Water

- Limit the use of bath-tubs for daily baths in the family. Bath-tubs are a big source of water wastage and are not a necessity for daily hygiene in today’s world.
- Limit the time spent under the shower. Many people use showers for relaxation. This can be replaced by some other means of relaxation.
- Limit the use of drinking water to what is necessary. So much of drinking water is wasted every day because we take more than we manage to drink.
- Limit the use of water for your household cleaning and cooking to what is necessary. The attitude that water is an infinite resource needs to change.
- If possible, recycle water in your household itself. So that water wastage is limited at its source.
Industry
Many industries use water as a free or cheap resource. This needs to change. Water should be labelled a valuable raw material and needs to supplied and utilized by industries sparingly.
Industries should be legally required to limit their use to water to a pre-decided volume.
Industries should be encouraged to create innovative ideas for water conservation and re-cycling.
Society and Country
Mass awareness programs should be conducted by societies through schools, colleges, social institutions, etc. to make the masses aware of the critical need to save water in today’s times. Once it becomes a socially relevant cause, people are automatically collectively motivated to find innovative ways to save water and they motivate and help each other. Once the society changes, it doesn’t take long for a country to change its collective consciousness about the same.
Global
Nations and the Global Organisations should be encouraged to invest in innovation and technology for Water Conservation and Water recycling.
‘Save Water, Save Life’ should be regular topic that should be highlighted at all National and Global Events of significance. This should be woven into the agenda of every significant political, industrial and social campaign for progress.
