Democracy: Short Essay on Democracy

Category: Economy of India On December 4, 2018 By Various Contributors

Democracy

Democracy is defined as the government by the people, of the people, and for the people. It is practiced in numerous nations across the world, but India is one of the best examples of democracy. This is because here democracy prevails in its true form despite the vast diversities that exist in the nation.

Democracy in India

India is considered the biggest Democracy in the world. It is the most populous nation that follows the democratic style of governance.

In a democracy, the head of the nation is chosen by the people of the nation by fair votes cast by citizens in favor of their favorite leader or the party which the leader represents.

In a democracy, all decisions are taken by consensus. People elect their representatives who negotiate in the decision-making process on their behalf. There are often intense debates to come to a consensus.

In the newer reforms, people have also asserted their right to information that was earlier not publicly available.

The flip-side of democracy is that decisions take a very long time to go ahead with so many opinions.

There is always a power play and unnecessary opposition to some well-intended decisions, just to assert the feeling of democracy.

There are as many opinions as there are people and as many ideologies as parties leading to some critical decisions getting endlessly postponed. Moreover, if they are taken, there will always be some people unhappy with those decisions.

Conclusion

In a democratic nation, all individuals are considered equal before the law. They have freedom of speech, equality, freedom of religion, and an equal right to cast a vote without any threat. Treating all members of society equally is one of the primary tenets of democracy. It is important to preserve our democracy and secularism and live with harmony.
