A new year is the mark of a new calendar month, which comprises of 12 months. It is celebrated every first day of the first month to commemorate the New Year. On the other hand, a resolution means a commitment or what you intend to do.
New Year resolution means having the intention to change one’s undesirable behavior or characteristics in order to improve one’s mode of lifestyle or to work towards one’s goal.
A New year resolution is a promise that one makes to oneself towards improving some quarter of one’s life. It is very common to make New Year Resolutions these days. The most common type of resolution is about one’s health and more specifically about losing weight. Another common resolution is about controlling alcoholic habits.
Why do we do New Year resolutions?
Since New Year symbolizes a beginning, it is easy to connect the beginning of a good habit to that of the New Year. In reality, it is always a good time to start a new habit, but people find it easier to connect a change to something. Often they can find others who are also going to resolve to make some improvement to their lifestyle at this time, and then it’s a matter of keeping company.
- The Roman makes a promise to their god called Janus yearly. The month January was named after the god Janus.
- The Babylonians made a promise to their god that they will return what they borrowed and pay their debt. They always do this yearly.
- The Christians also made a New Year resolution on the watch-night which is called the eve of the New Year. (31st of December).

The success of these resolutions
Most people who make New Year Resolutions give them up within a few days. However, there are a few who do take them up seriously. These are the people who take the challenge seriously in the first place and not the date. The date is only a convenient starting point.
A lot of people make resolutions only because it appears to be the mode. They will gather the necessary paraphernalia like jogging shoes or diaries etc. with much gusto, and then within a few days, all will be forgotten till the end of December when it is time to make new resolutions!
The New Year resolution is about making a vow or having it in mind to do something in the coming New Year or to improve one’s life. To achieve your goals it needs dedication and persistence. New Year Resolution is one of those notions that can be put to use quite productively but for most people turns out to be a futile exercise.
