Short Essay on Rivers

Category: Essays and Paragraphs On July 3, 2019 By Teamwork

Rivers – Short Essay.

The river is basically a water body which is smaller in size when compared to the ocean and a sea.

River is different from many other water bodies because it is continuously moving on its course, unlike a lake.

River water is used to meet the basic water needs of people near the river bank and its adjacent areas.

The river Nile is the longest river. The Ganges, a sacred river for the Hindus is the largest river in India. Other rivers like the Danube, Seine, Rhine, Yangtze, etc. are the other large rivers across the world.

Rivers have been used for transportation since ancient times. Rivers are also used for cruises that transport people. However, river cruises are more a matter of leisure rather than a mode of transport nowadays.

Types of River:

There are basically four types of classification of the river:

1. Youthful River:

This type of river has a steep gradient and flows very quickly. Its turbines are also very few. Channels of youthful river flow deeper than being wide. Its examples are:

  • Trinity
  • Ebro
  • Brazos

2: Mature River

A mature river has a gradient that is less steep than the Youthful River and flows slowly. Its discharge is more than the youthful river and also includes many tributaries. Channels erode wider as compared to the Last one.

Examples:

  • Mississippi
  • Saint
  • Lawrence
  • Danube
  • Ohio
  • Thames
  • Parana

3. Old River

This type of river has a low gradient, and erosive energy is also low. Flood plains basically characterize them.

Examples:

  • Yellow
  • Tigris
  • Indus
  • Euphrates
  • Nile

4. Rejuvenated River

A tectonic lift raises its gradient.

Examples:

  • Rio Grande
  • Colorado River

Conclusion

Rivers have often been important to humans. They have been crucial in providing food and livelihood apart from transport over the centuries. So rivers are our basic necessity, and we cannot live without them.
