The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary ( Bhagwan Mahavir National Park) in Goa was set up in 1978 and covers an area of around 240 sq. km. The nearest town Ponda is 29 km from the park. Dabolim, the nearest airport is at a distance of 80 km from the park. The nearest railway station is Collem, 5 km away from the park. The national highways connect this park with important towns of the neighboring states.
The park falls in the tropical zone and gets heavy rainfall during monsoon. The forests of the park covering the hills of Western Ghat are evergreen, semi-evergreen and deciduous. The natural beauty of the park is enchanting and breathtaking.
The fauna of the park comprise of mouse deer, leopard, flying squirrel, sloth bear, chital, porcupine, civet, jungle cat, king cobra, python, jungle fowl etc.
The best months for visiting the park are from October to March, after the rainy season. The park has one rest house and cottages for the tourists. Besides, there are a number of hotels in the sub-urban towns close to the park.
