Facts about Goa

Goa, the smallest state in India, is located in the Western corner of India in Konkan region. Goa is known for its beaches. There are many famous places of worship and churches. Goa is one of the major tourist destination in India and is visited by both Indian and Foreign tourists in large numbers. The facts of Goa state is mentioned below.

Population: With a population around 1.4 million, Goa state stands 25th among all the states in India in terms of population.

Boundary: The state of Maharashtra lies on the north of Goa. On the south and east of Goa, lies the state of Karnataka. On its west lies the Arabian Sea.

Economy: It is interesting to note that per capital GDP of Goa is highest in India and is considered the richest state in India. The people of Goa live a high quality of life.

Capital : The capital city of Goa is Panaji.

Largest city: Vasco da Gama is the largest City.

Climate: Goa has topical monsoon climate. The summer in Goa is hot and humid with maximum temperature around 35 degree Celsius. The winter is short and very pleasant. The winter temperature doesn’t normally fall below 18 degree Celsius.

Districts: Two districts namely North Goa and South Goa. North Goa is headquartered at Panaji while South Goa at Margao.

Religion: Around 65.7% of people in Goa practice Hinduism, 26.6% practice Christianity and 6.8% practice Islam. The Sikh, Buddhists and Jain community comprises the remaining 0.9% of total population of Goa.

Literacy: The literacy rate in the State is around 87 percent.

World Heritage Sites: There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites in Goa such as Basilica of Bom Jesus and Churches and remains of Old Goa. The mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier are in basilica. There are many Churches and convents in Old Goa.

Football: It is the most popular game in Goa.

Tourist Places in Goa: The UNESCO World heritage sites mentioned above, Churches, Mandrem Beach, Baga Beach, Cavelossim Beach, Candolim Beach, etc.
